Restylane Injection

Looking for non-surgical advancements in facial rejuvenation? Well, look no further. With the recent introduction of a revolutionary filler known as Restylane, patients in the United States now have access to a product that has been used in Europe for several years showing great success in achieving facial rejuvenation with injections. While there are numerous injectable fillers on the market today, many of them have their drawbacks including allergic reactions and relatively short life spans. Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic filler that is immune to these drawbacks given its unique chemical composition. In December 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Restylane for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Additional applications of Restylane include:

  • Lip augmentation and/or enhancement
  • Reducing the appearance of lines around the mouth
  • Modifying nasolabial folds (under the nose) and eye trough deformities
  • Facial contouring of the cheeks and mouth
It is important to note that while Restylane has been approved to enhance the appearance and fullness of the lips, the safety and efficacy of this application of Restylane has not been established by the FDA.

Restylane
As we grow older, more signs of aging become more evident on our faces. This is recognizable as wrinkles and folds, or nasolabial folds. There are various injectable cosmetic fillers available to help improve upon one’s facial appearance and achieve a more youthful look. These fillers add volume and smooth out wrinkles. Collagen and fat are some of the more common fillers. Restylane is a new form of injectable filler that provides advantages over fat and collagen injections. Restylane is a non-animal, biodegradable gel based on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in most of our bodies as it provides volume and fullness to the skin. Restylane has been proven to last longer than fat and collagen injections. It maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture. What results is a longer-lasting, youthful facial appearance.

Restylane can be used to either shape facial contours, smooth wrinkles, or sculpt lips. What results is a healthy, more youthful, and fuller appearance. This has grown in popularity. Since 1996, over a million individuals have received Restylane injections worldwide.

If you are considering Restylane injections, the following information will provide you with a basic introduction to the procedure. For more detailed information about how this procedure may help you, we recommend that you consult a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist who is board certified or has extensive experience in administering Restylane injections.

How are restylane treatments performed?

Even though no pre-testing is needed, before receiving Restylane injections patients should avoid using aspirin, Vitamin E supplements and other medications. This can increase bruising or bleeding. Be sure to ask your doctor about what you should do to prepare for Restylane injections.

The actual treatment itself is very brief. Receiving Restylane injections can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. This all depends on the amount of the area that needs to be treated. During the treatment, the practitioner injects tiny amounts of Restylane into the skin using a very fine needle.

For wrinkles, when the Restylane is injected, it procedures natural volume under the wrinkle, which lifts it up and smooths it out. For facial contours, the Restylane corrects deep folds and lifts up the skin from cheeks and chin. This provides a fuller shape for the chin or a rounder, more sensual line along the cheeks.

When using Restylane for lip augmentation, the gel is injected into the inside of the upper or lower lip. It is also injected along the lip line. Not only will this help bring about a more youthful look, it can also help prevent lipstick from bleeding into the small lines around the lips.

What can I expect after restylane treatment?

The results of these injections can be seen almost immediately following treatment. Areas may be swollen or red, but should only last for only one or two days. The results of the Restylane can last six months or even longer. Results may vary. Factors such as age, skin type, daily activities can influence how long the results of Restylane will last.

Patients can choose to undergo another treatment twice a year. Going in for a following treatment before the results of the previous Restylane injections disappear will help maintain the lasting effect. Those that do not undergo a follow-up treatment will find their results returning to a pre-treatment state. Discuss with your practitioner to plan future visits.

What is Restylane Made of?

Produced and marketed by a company in Sweden, Restylane is the first, and currently the only, dermal filler approved by the FDA that is made of a biodegradable hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance present in all living organisms. This natural acid provides volume and fullness to an organism’s epidermis (i.e., skin). Restylane is produced as a clear gel substance and is injected directly beneath the surface of the skin. Through the introduction of Restylane to the treatment area, the hyaluronic-based gel adds natural volume and lift resulting in smoother wrinkles and less prominent folds. Moreover, and what distinguishes Restylane from other dermal fillers, is the way in which Restylane permeates the dermal tissue and naturally binds to water molecules. Through this action, the modified water molecules assist in achieving and maintaining volume possessing a natural appearance. Over time, Restylane is gradually degraded by the body and dissolves without any residue or trace. Restylane treatments results are immediately visible and typically last about six months. Factors such as the patient’s age, skin type, etc., will effect how long Restylane treatments results are sustained. Moreover, most patients require only one Restylane injection to obtain optimal results. Occasionally, additional treatments may be required to achieve the patient’s desired outcome. During the consultation visit with the cosmetic surgeon, the number of required treatments will be addressed.

The answer to long-lasting wrinkle correction is Restylane. If you're considering a wrinkle correction treatment, there are a few things you should know about Restylane.

Q: What is Restylane®?
A: Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Q: What is Restylane made of?
A: Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA™. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.

Q: How is Restylane different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
A: Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.*

Q: What should patients do prior to treatment?
A: Restylane requires no pretesting, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence.

Q: Is Restylane safe?
A: Yes. Restylane has been used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. Restylane has a highly favorable safety profile. It's composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body. Restylane is fully biocompatible. There is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use.* The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve in less than seven days.

Precautions
The safety of Restylane for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females or in patients under 18 years has not been established.

The safety of Restylane in patients with increased susceptibility to keloid formation and hypertrophic scarring has not been studied. Restylane should not be used in patients with known susceptibility to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring.

The patient should be informed that he or she should minimize exposure of the treated area to excessive sun and UV lamp exposure and extreme cold weather until any initial swelling and redness has resolved.

If laser treatment, chemical peeling or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Restylane there is a possible risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if Restylane is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure.

Q: Can Restylane be used anywhere on the face?
A: Restylane has been used in more than 3 million treatments7 in over 70 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. It is currently indicated in the U.S. for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.

Q: How long does Restylane last?
A: Restylane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally last for about six months. The unique NASHA™ technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone. Q: How often should I have Restylane treatments done?
A: Treatments are typically scheduled at six-month intervals. Please be sure to consult your physician about recommendations for follow-up treatments.

Q: How is Restylane different from Botox®?
A: Restylane is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products.

Q: How is Restylane different from bovine collagen?
A: Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cow) and requires an allergy test. Restylane can be administered without pretesting, so no waiting is required. With Restylane there is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction.*

Q: Do the injections hurt?
A: Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your physician may anesthetize the treatment area.

Q: How much do Restylane treatments cost?
A: Restylane is a customized procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane should be comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Because Restylane is long-lasting, it may be very economical over the long term. Please consult your physician to determine the best recommendation for your particular needs.
